The mountain setting

A different side
of New Mexico.

Sierra Prometida describes a 40-acre ranch in Black Lake, about five miles south of Angel Fire in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Grassland, wild iris, ponderosa pine, and aspen form the setting for its alpacas.

This is a place to ask about a small ranch visit while traveling in the area. Confirm what the appointment includes before adding it to a family itinerary.

The herd comes first

Huacayas, fleece,
and breeding.

The ranch describes a Huacaya herd with a range of colors and bloodlines, emphasizing the quality of its breeding animals. It also identifies itself as a charter member of the North American Alpaca Fiber Producers.

For visitors, that offers a starting point for questions about fleece and the differences between individual animals. Ask your host what they look for in an alpaca and how those traits relate to the herd’s fiber.

For prospective owners

Look beyond
a photograph.

The ranch publishes individual animal listings with details such as pedigree, age category, and price. Its yearling-female section provides one place to begin exploring the animals offered for sale.

If ownership is your reason for visiting, explain your goals when arranging the appointment. Ask about current availability, animal records, temperament, and the care each alpaca needs. Confirm all sale terms directly; an online listing is a starting point for a conversation.

Plan your visit

A little preparation
before the mountain drive.

Ask what is included

Confirm the visit length, any fee, and whether the appointment suits your children’s ages. Ask about animal contact rather than assuming feeding or petting is included.

Check access and weather

Request current road and parking directions, and ask about walking surfaces or mobility needs. Bring water, suitable shoes, and layers for the forecast.

Continue the conversation

Every herd gives you
something new to notice.

A ranch visit can raise questions about everything from fleece texture to how young alpacas grow. Our alpaca guides offer a way to explore those subjects at your own pace. Before an appointment, choose a topic that interests your family and bring a question for the host.

When planning another day out, explore more alpaca farm visits and compare the experiences described by each farm. A breeding-ranch appointment may have a different focus from a scheduled family tour. For trips beyond New Mexico, browse farms by state and arrange stops that fit both your route and your interests.
