U-pick farms
in New Mexico

A basket of chile, a handful of berries or flowers for the table. Let the season guide your next farm visit.

Choose the crop, then the day

Bring a little of the farm home.

New Mexico’s picking outings range from mountain orchards to flower fields and green-chile harvests. Each farm below has its main picking crop shown up front, so you can start with what your family wants to gather.

The crop labels describe each farm’s advertised specialties, rather than a sales ranking. Seasons are a planning guide: check that picking is open and there is ripe produce or cuttable flowers before making the trip.

AlbuquerqueBig Jim FarmsFlowers and pumpkins in seasonMain picking cropGreen chile

Pick a New Mexico harvest staple.

Big Jim Farms’ signature picking experience is green chile, with several traditional varieties and roasting available. Flower fields and a pumpkin patch add other seasonal reasons to visit.

When to pick

The farm describes green chile from August into autumn, flowers from July into mid-October and pumpkins in fall. Frost and crop readiness determine the actual picking window.

How the visit works

Check in for a basket and ask which chile varieties suit the heat level you want. The website describes free entry, with picked produce, bouquets and roasting charged separately.

Location Albuquerque’s North Valley. Confirm the entrance for your chosen picking activity directly with the farm.

Take home flowers you chose yourself.

Five Heart Farms makes cut-your-own flowers a central visitor experience. Pick stems for a bouquet, with farm events and a children’s play yard offering other ways to spend time there.

When to pick

The farm describes its flower season as July–October. Visit during published event hours or arrange a private u-pick session; do not assume the fields accept visitors every day.

How the visit works

Buckets and scissors are available at the farm store or flower stations. Check current bouquet sizes, prices and event admission before visiting. Ask staff which stems are ready to cut.

Location Texico, on County/Curry Road 10. The flower page directs visitors to the signed entrance at 371 Curry Road 10; the site header also lists 365 County Road 10. Confirm the entrance before traveling.

La LuzNichols Ranch and OrchardsMountain orchard fruitMain picking cropApples & cherries

An orchard visit shaped by the harvest.

Nichols offers apple and cherry picking in a mountain setting. Its apple page describes about 3,000 trees over roughly 20 acres, with different varieties ripening through the season.

When to pick

Apples are generally listed from mid-August through October; cherries are an early-summer crop. Cherry picking can finish quickly, so confirm that fruit remains before making the drive.

How the visit works

Check in at the barn for picking locations and instructions. Ask about current fruit prices, containers and any festival admission. Fruit sold at the market outside harvest season does not mean u-pick is open.

Location 236 Cottonwood Canyon Road, La Luz.

A berry outing in northeastern New Mexico.

Houser Raspberry Ranch advertises a seasonal raspberry u-pick experience in La Cueva. The property also has a café and general store, which have their own operating schedules.

When to pick

The ranch describes raspberry picking from mid-to-late August through October. Confirm the current field opening, ripe-fruit supply and picking hours before leaving.

How the visit works

Ask about reservations, containers, the price per container or weight, and how much ripe fruit is available. Café and greenhouse opening hours are not a picking schedule.

Before you fill the basket

A few questions make picking easier.

What is ready today?

Ask which crop and varieties are open for picking, and whether a busy weekend has reduced the supply.

What should we bring?

Check whether the farm supplies baskets, scissors or take-home containers. Bring water and shoes suited to field paths.

How is it priced?

Fruit may be sold by weight, flowers by bouquet or container, and special events by ticket. Ask before you begin.

How much will we use?

Pick an amount you can eat, share or preserve. Keep berries and cut flowers shaded during the journey home.

Keep the curiosity growing

The outing carries on at home.

Sorting the apples, arranging a bouquet or deciding what to cook with fresh chile gives children another way to take part. When you are ready for the next trip, explore more farm visits and family activities that fit the time you have.

For a different kind of farm day, get to know alpacas and the questions children might ask when meeting them. Arrange the visit with the farm before heading out.

If you are traveling beyond New Mexico, find farm outings by state and look for a visit along your route. Local harvests can make a familiar trip feel different from one season to the next.
