Evenings worth planning around
These are established holiday events with dedicated organizers, event websites or substantial official visitor information. The experiences range from a campus-wide luminaria display to ticketed garden walks and Carlsbad’s river tours.
Each listing identifies how you visit. A drive-through route, a walking show and a boat departure need different plans—especially with young children.
Checked October 1, 2026. Some organizers have announced dates; others still show past-season information. The notes below identify what is confirmed and what needs another check.

Drive or walk FarmingtonSan Juan College LuminariasA campus-wide evening of candlelit paths and rooftops
San Juan College’s long-running luminaria display fills the campus with glowing paper lanterns. This is a large community tradition with a driving route and a walking option, centered on candlelight rather than animated LED scenes.
- Season & dates
- December 5, 2026, at 6 p.m. is listed in the college’s academic calendar. Confirm the final driving route and any earlier walking access with the college.
- Admission & booking
- Check the college’s event announcement for final access arrangements. This is a community display, not a nightly commercial light park.

Choose the vehicle route if staying warm is the priority. For walking, plan your parking and return route before setting out; follow event staff directions where cars and pedestrians share access.

A daytime BioPark visit and River of Lights are different visits. Check the holiday event’s own admission details.

Christmas on the Pecos official websiteBefore you head out
A little planning.
More time under the lights.
Book the right experience
Check whether you’re buying per-person admission, a vehicle pass or a particular departure. Daytime garden admission may not include the evening light show.
Leave room for the arrival
Parking, queues and boarding can take longer than the drive suggests. Follow the organizer’s arrival window and save your ticket before leaving.
Plan for the temperature
Pack layers for walking and river trips. Even a drive-through outing can include time outside the car before or after the route.
Check the feature that matters
Santa visits, food vendors, train rides and sensory-friendly sessions can have separate schedules. Confirm the part your family is looking forward to.
When daylight returns
Save another idea for another day.
A holiday evening can be the whole plan. When the family is ready for a daytime outing, explore farm visits and other easy days outside and choose something close enough to enjoy without rushing.
For children who spent the light show spotting animal shapes, a closer look at alpacas can turn that interest toward a real farm visit. Check visiting arrangements before building the day around meeting the animals.
If the holidays take you across state lines, look for farm outings along your travel route. A short stop in daylight can give a long journey a welcome change of pace.
