Educational tour
Meet the alpacas and Icelandic horses while learning about their care, history, and roles on the farm.
Yorktown Heights, New York
An elevated Hudson Valley farm pairing an award-winning Huacaya herd with guided visits, workshops, Icelandic horses, and a fiber-filled barn store.
Farm profile
Faraway Farm sits on a Yorktown Heights property that has been in the Blumberg family since 1951. Owners Leda Blumberg and Steve Cole continue that agricultural tradition with Huacaya alpacas and Icelandic horses. The hillside also holds organic vegetable gardens, fruit trees, berry bushes, flowers, and shiitake logs, giving visitors a broader view of the land than an alpaca encounter alone.
The alpaca story began in 2007 after a roadside meeting with a chocolate-colored cria inspired the couple to research and establish a foundation herd. Today the farm describes its alpacas as award-winning and values them both as individual animals and for their naturally colorful fleece. Annual shearing supplies fiber that is milled into yarn and used in clothing and other goods sold through the farm.
Guided experiences
Educational tours introduce guests to the alpacas and the farm’s friendly Icelandic horses while covering animal care, natural history, and the ways people work with these species. The farm is roughly 40 miles north of New York City and says it can be reached by car or by combining Metro-North service with local transportation. Because this is an active private farm, every visit must be arranged in advance.
Faraway also offers a virtual Alpaca Meet & Greet for work meetings, family gatherings, and celebrations held online. That option gives distant groups a way to meet the herd without traveling. Current in-person and virtual formats, timing, prices, group limits, accessibility, and weather policies should all be confirmed directly with the farm when making arrangements.

Learning on the farm
Faraway’s workshop program reflects the whole property. Topics presented by the farm include knitting, organic gardening, growing shiitake mushrooms, alpaca care, animal communication, and energy healing. Knitting sessions welcome all ability levels, while the mushroom workshop has included hands-on log inoculation and a prepared log for participants to take home.
These programs are offered at selected times rather than on a fixed daily schedule. Prospective participants should use the farm’s mailing list or contact the owners for upcoming dates, age guidance, registration requirements, and pricing. A scheduled workshop does not imply that the rest of the property is open for unscheduled visits.
The landscape also serves as a setting for private events and arranged creative work. Faraway says fashion magazines, wedding photographers, theater companies, television productions, and independent photographers have used the property. Anyone considering the farm for an event, portrait session, or production should request permission and discuss scope, timing, site access, and fees directly with the owners.

The farm store occupies a vintage sheep barn and opens on tour days or by appointment. Its inventory brings together homegrown yarn and alpaca pieces with work from local artisans and selected Peruvian imports. Published examples include sweaters, shawls, hats, scarves, gloves, throws, hand-woven rugs, and soft stuffed animals.
Many artisan pieces are one of a kind, so the selection can change. Visitors looking for a particular size, color, yarn, or gift should ask before making a special trip. The farm also maintains an online shop for people who cannot visit in person, while direct contact is encouraged when a specific item is not shown online.

Faraway Farm adds a fiber-and-workshop dimension to the directory of New York alpaca farms. A family might reserve an educational tour, a maker might watch for a knitting session, and a remote group can ask about a virtual encounter. The appointment model keeps each experience tied to the farm’s working schedule.
Before booking, families can review what to expect when meeting alpacas and learn more about the uses of alpaca fiber. Both topics connect directly to the animals, yarn, clothing, and farm-store goods visitors may encounter here.
