Farm profile
Carolina Sunshine Alpaca Farm is a year-round visitor farm on US Highway 64 west of Pittsboro. Owners Danette Boezio and Em Stecker took over the established alpaca property after encountering it for sale, retained experienced farm staff, and began rebuilding and rebranding the operation. The farm now combines alpaca husbandry with public visits, educational programs, a retail store, party space, hay sales, and products made from alpaca fiber and composted manure.
Public access is more flexible than at many appointment-only farms because visitors can choose between two formats. A PacaVisit allows people to move around the visitor lanes at their own pace, while a PacaTour is a reserved private experience led by farm staff. Both provide opportunities to observe the herd, but the amount of structure, education, and scheduled attention differs. Selecting the right option before arrival helps families match the day to their available time and interest in detailed farm information.
Two visit formats
A PacaVisit is an unguided visit rather than a timed tour. Guests walk the farm lanes, approach animals at the fences, feed and pet animals when appropriate, and take photographs without entering pastures or shelters. Visitors may stay for an hour or remain longer during open hours. Yard games, coloring pages, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, and covered seating add options for groups that want to linger. Advance booking is available, while same-day walk-ins are accepted during posted PacaVisit hours.
The private PacaTour lasts about one hour and is reserved for groups of four to 16 participants. A staff member explains alpaca history, daily care, fleece uses, and farm routines while also introducing the farm’s goats, barn cats, and livestock guardian dogs. Farm-provided treats encourage the alpacas to approach, but touching is never guaranteed; the animals decide whether to participate. The tour begins and ends in the farm store, leaving time to see goods made from the herd’s fiber.
Follow the visitor lanes independently, spend time by the fences, play games, and stay at your own pace.
Reserve a private, staff-led hour focused on alpaca care, farm animals, and fleece.
Browse alpaca-fiber goods, farm-made products, gifts, and supplies during posted store hours.
Gatherings and classes
The PacaParty Barn gives groups a two-hour open-air gathering space with picnic-table seating for as many as 30 people. A reservation includes a PacaVisit for each guest and access to a separate play field for games and sports. The farm supplies the venue, tables, and selected play equipment, while the host handles decorations, food, beverages, cake, serving items, and any additional activities. At least two adult chaperones are requested for group safety.
Farm programming also changes through the year. The calendar may include fiber crafts, crochet sessions, yoga near the alpacas, seasonal visits, or other scheduled activities. Some classes include a PacaVisit before or after instruction, connecting the activity with time around the herd. Because dates, age guidance, materials, and capacity vary by event, visitors should rely on the current farm calendar rather than expecting a recurring program to run every week.
Review the PacaParty BarnPlanning the visit
Most visitor lanes are outdoors, with only limited covered areas, so guests should dress for heat, cold, or rain and consider closed-toe shoes. Ramps reach the public areas, and the farm can open a ground-level sidewalk route, but loose gravel, doorway ledges, uneven ground, and loud cooling fans may affect some visitors. Outside animals are not permitted because the farm’s guardian dogs interpret unfamiliar animals as a threat. Guests should not pet the working dogs or bring animal treats; the farm controls feeding to protect the herd’s health.

Carolina Sunshine adds an unusually flexible self-paced option to the collection of alpaca farms in North Carolina. Visitors who want detailed instruction can reserve a private tour, while those who prefer an open schedule can wander the public lanes, pause by the herd, use the activity areas, and revisit the animals during the same outing.
Calm approaches and voluntary contact remain important in either format. Reading about what to expect when meeting alpacas can help families understand why feeding and touching follow farm rules. The overview of alpaca farm types and visitor experiences provides further context for comparing self-guided access, scheduled tours, breeding operations, fiber farms, and farms centered on special events.
