The farm behind the name

A visitor experience at Northern Solstice Alpaca Farm

Maine Alpaca Experience is the visitor and retail side of Northern Solstice Alpaca Farm in Unity. The farm has raised alpacas since 2004 and says it has welcomed people for educational tours since 2006. Regular visits introduce guests to the herd while staff explain alpaca care, behavior, farming, and fiber.

Compared with many alpaca farms in Maine, the Unity property offers several ways to learn without turning the farm into a conventional petting zoo. The alpacas may approach and interact, but the farm explains that they do not necessarily want to be touched. That distinction gives visitors a more realistic look at how alpacas behave around people.

Ways to take part

From an informal farm tour to a guided walk

A small family can visit without arranging a private session, while guests seeking more direct participation can reserve an alpaca walk. Organized and remote groups have separate options.

Drop in

Free farm tours

Meet the Unity herd, ask questions, and learn about alpaca care and fiber without paying an admission fee or making a regular family reservation.

At the Unity farm

An accessible visit with room to slow down

The farm describes the tour area as wheelchair and walker friendly, with flat paths. In warmer weather, visitors can use pasture-side picnic tables, benches, and shaded seating. The on-site shop carries yarn, clothing, and gifts for those who want to see how alpaca fiber moves beyond the pasture.

Dogs should remain at home because unfamiliar animals can frighten the herd. Closed-toe, sturdy footwear is required for reserved alpaca walks, which may follow wooded trails or remain on the farm depending on weather, trail conditions, and the season.

Annual fleece 400 pounds reported

The fiber side of the farm

Sorting the harvest before it becomes something useful

Northern Solstice reports harvesting roughly 400 pounds of alpaca fiber each year. The fleece is sorted and graded at the farm, then sent to selected artisans and production partners for yarn, clothing, and other finished goods. Its breeding decisions also incorporate analysis of individual animals' fiber.

Finished pieces are sold at the Unity farm shop, through the online store, and at a separate Northport retail location. The Northport shop has live camera views of the herd, but visitors looking for the animals themselves need the Unity address.
