A seasonal working ranch with free tours and guided alpaca walks, paired with a separate year-round retail store in downtown Belfast.
How the ranch began
Blue Alpaca began after two three-sided barns were built and two pastures were fenced outside downtown Belfast. Its original six alpacas arrived from Northern Solstice Alpaca Farm, connecting the ranch's beginning to another established Maine herd.
An existing ranch building became a small store in 2016. The business later added its Main Street shop, creating a different arrangement from many alpaca farms in Maine: the working ranch operates seasonally, while the downtown retail side continues through the year.
Two Belfast destinations
The alpaca visit and the full retail location are not at the same address. Visitors looking for the herd need the ranch on Poors Mills Road.

Regular tours are short and informal. Guided walks provide more time with one alpaca and require advance planning.
Seasonal tours usually last about 15 to 20 minutes. A ranch worker accompanies visitors inside the enclosures, introduces individual alpacas, answers questions, and may offer time for feeding, petting, and photographs.
Ordinary visits do not require an appointment. Groups larger than six and guests who need assistance are asked to contact the ranch before arriving. Children under twelve stay with an adult, and dogs are not allowed on the ranch grounds.
The half-hour walk begins with handling instructions before each participant leads an alpaca around the ranch. Stops for photographs and treats are built into the route.
Participants must be at least twelve to lead their own alpaca; younger children can accompany an adult. Appropriate footwear matters because the walk crosses outdoor terrain, and severe weather can change the schedule.
Current walk informationMeet them before visiting
The ranch website profiles its females and males by name, describing family relationships, fleece traits, breeding roles, and how each animal behaves around visitors. Some approach for treats or walks; others are more comfortable observing from a distance.
Beyond the visitor season
Blue Alpaca remains a working ranch behind its tours and downtown storefront. The herd supports fiber production as well as services for current and potential alpaca owners.
The ranch and downtown shops connect visitors with yarn, clothing, socks, rugs, and other alpaca-fiber products.
The farm identifies males available for breeding and records family relationships throughout its online herd directory.
Boarding is offered for people interested in owning alpacas without maintaining the animals on their own property.
