Farm overview
Prairie Rose Alpacas began after its owners visited a local farm during National Alpaca Days in 2011. A small group of foundation females established the Pleasant Plains herd, which has remained centered on Huacaya alpacas and their fleece.
The farm evaluates animals for health, conformation, temperament, and fiber characteristics. Barb Bernardi’s work as a certified fiber sorter supports annual fleece assessment, while periodic histograms provide another way to follow fiber quality between generations.
Breeding and placement
Prairie Rose works with established owners and people comparing farm profiles before beginning a herd. Its stated goal is to provide guidance after a purchase rather than treating the sale as the end of the relationship.
Herdsires are selected for genetics, fleece development, and traits that remain useful as animals mature.
Females and other breeding stock may be offered when suitable animals are available.
Amiable animals may also suit fiber enthusiasts or youth agricultural programs.
Important visitor information
Prairie Rose currently states that liability considerations prevent public farm tours. This is a breeder profile, not an invitation for an unscheduled visit. People exploring Illinois farms should use the official website for sales or breeding questions.
